TENCEL Modal

TENCEL Modal

A milestone in the development of environmentally sustainable textiles, 85% of our collection is made with luxuriously soft and breathable Satin TENCEL™.

What is TENCEL™ and how is it made?

TENCEL™ is the brand name of the popular plant-based fabric owned by the Australian company Lenzing. While there are several sustainable solutions under the premium brand name TENCEL™ - TENCEL™ Lyocell, TENCEL™ Modal and TENCEL™ Lyocell Filament -  they all help to maintain the environmental balance by being integrated into nature´s cycle.

TENCEL™ Modal fibers are extracted from naturally grown beech wood by an environmentally responsible integrated pulp-to-fiber process, which is self-sufficient in energy and recovers co-products from component parts of the wood. The fibers are certified as compostable and biodegradable, and thus can fully revert back to nature.

What does this mean? How does TENCEL™ impact the environment?

  • TENCEL™ wood pulp is sourced from sustainably managed PEFC or  FSC tree plantations, while around 30% of rayon and viscose used in fashion is made from pulp sourced from endangered and ancient forests.
  • TENCEL™ is made with a closed-loop system which means that almost no solvent is dumped into the ecosystem. Instead, it is recycled time and time again to produce new fibers and minimize harmful waste.
  • TENCEL™ uses less energy and water than conventional cotton
  • TENCEL™  is pure white when produced, so no bleaching is necessary and undying is always an option
  • TENCEL™  allows color dyes to penetrate deeply into the fiber structure, resulting in fewer dyes and impressive color brilliance.

TENCEL™  is biodegradable when it isn’t mixed with other synthetic fibers like we do!

Naturally dyed TENCEL™

Our signature Satin TENCEL™ fabric is dyed in a state of the art dye house in India that adheres to the highest environmental and social standards. Whether you’re browsing our sustainable pants and shorts for women collection, or searching for earth-friendly accessories for women, you can be safe in the knowledge that our dying process retains the natural values that TENCEL™ is founded on.

Our sustainable and equitable factory is powered by solar energy, ensuring that any excess energy is directed back to the local community and not wasted. Water used for dyeing is captured in reservoirs from the monsoon rains which is then purified and processed using non-toxic and AZO free dyes.

Nearly 90% of the water used during the dyeing process is recycled in a common effluent treatment plant. Sponsorship of the industrial park has been provided by grants in collaboration with the UN and European Commission through the SWITCH-Asia initiative.
