Neu Destinations: Madeira

Neu Destinations: Madeira

For our 2nd NEU DESTINATION story we teamed up with the talented couple of @allaboutwanderlust to take you on a trip to the magical island of Madeira. Just 35 miles long and 13 miles at its widest point, this vibrant green Portuguese island set in the Atlantic ocean is far from being another beach destination. With a carefully packed suitcase featuring a capsule wardrobe from our women’s organic clothing collection, we’re ready to explore.

1st stop: the Santana Traditional Houses in our favorite dress for all occasions,  the Easy Slip Dress in Midnight. All the pieces in our sustainable collection of clothing are designed to work with each other - feeling the breeze? Looking to cover your shoulders? Don’t forget to pack a shirt or blouse to add layers.

There are many places in Madeira where you can see the traditional triangular and colourful Madeiran houses but Santana is most definitely your best bet! These were mainly rural homes, used by local farmers, during the settlement of the island. Nowadays, they are mainly shops making it the best place to stroll for mornings or late afternoons.

2nd stop: the iconic streets of Funchal Old Town in our Kerala Blouse and Cropped Palazzo Pant in champagne.

Most of the island's social and cultural life is concentrated in its streets. Founded by the Portuguese in the 15th century, walking the typical black and white cobblestones streets of the Old Town of Funchal is at the same time knowing its history. For example, the one on the walls of the Sé do Funchal, the city's cathedral. Built at the end of the 15th century by Manuel I of Portugal, it was completed in 1514.

3rd stop: the Véu Da noiva Viewpoint in our Essential Shirt Dress in white.

Situated on the old road which connects Seixal to São Vicente, the Véu da Noiva Viewpoint offers one of the most typical landscapes of Madeira. From this point you can see the Véu da Noiva Waterfall, which resembles a bride's veil, due to its height and the torrents of water that gush down the hillside.

From this viewpoint there is also a pleasant view of the Atlantic and the slopes of the northern coast of Madeira.

4th stop: Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse in our coveted Formentera Linen Kaftan in Fuchsia.

The Ponta do Pargo lighthouse stands on a cliff, 300 meters above sea level, at Ponta da Vigia, the westernmost point on Madeira Island. It was built in 1922. In 1999, it was considered as local heritage and since 2001 it has had a small museum where several pieces relating to Madeira lighthouses are exhibited, from photographs to documents, concentrating these important monuments in the history of the archipelago.
